3 Affordable Plans For Burial Insurance with Fibromyalgia

This chronic condition is an uncomfortable and painful reality for about 4 million Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Will this painful reality affect the actuality of being able to qualify for burial coverage?

The truth is, having this diagnosis will NOT affect the ability to get coverage.

However, certain complications that are associated with this condition CAN affect coverage from top burial expense insurance providers.

Burial Insurance with Fibromyalgia

This common condition is thought to be caused by the way the brain and spinal cord process painful and non-painful signals leading to amplified pain sensations. This then leads to widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood problems.

Plan Basics

These plans come with:

  • No Expiration
  • Coverage Lock
  • Price Lock
  • Builds Cash Value
  • No Medical Exam
  • No Waiting Period Options

Burial Insurance falls under the umbrella of Simplified Issue Whole Life coverage.

Simplified Issue means that you will never be asked to get any sort of medical exam. The process of obtaining a policy can be done completely over the phone from the comfort of your home.

Whole Life coverage never expires and has the same prices throughout the entire life of the insured.

These policies also build a cash value meaning that over time the insured is able to borrow against the policy if the need arises.

While you will never be asked to get a medical exam, you will be asked a series of questions in order to qualify for a policy that has immediate coverage with no waiting period.

These plans were designed specifically with seniors in mind to create an affordable financial plan to cover the inevitable end-of-life costs.

While you cannot plan for when this will be, you can plan for how the costs will be dealt with.

Why This Widespread Pain Matters

While most companies will not ask about your fibromyalgia they might ask about other associated conditions.

If your widespread pain developed due to lupus or rheumatoid arthritis it could affect your coverage options.

Other medical situations that could affect acceptance from certain companies are depression and sleep apnea.

Depression, while not a concern for most carriers, could affect your coverage especially depending on the medications you take to combat it.

Sleep apnea could affect your coverage options if you use oxygen equipment to assist with breathing (CPAP). The majority of carriers are fine with sleep apnea, just make sure to mention this to your agent.

Most other conditions that are closely linked will not cause issues however it is important that you let your agent know about ANY medical treatments you have received.

The decision-making process of whether or not a company will accept you for coverage is the underwriting process. The criteria are set prior to you submitting an application and is the same for everyone.

Your agent will help pre-qualify you for a plan prior to submitting an application. You will be asked a series of “YES” or “NO” health questions to determine eligibility.

The underwriter is then simply determining if you meet the pre-set requirements by running a MIB and prescription history check to confirm the answers to the health questions.

What are MIB and prescription history checks?

MIB stands for Medical Information Bureau. The information gathered is used to confirm the YES/NO answers given. The prescription history check, as it sounds, confirms your pharmaceutical background to make sure you have not taken a medication that conflicts with your prior answers.

As it relates to this diagnosis of widespread pain, there are plenty of companies that will accept this condition and not even ask about it!

Top 3 Plans

Below are the top company recommendations for those with fibromyalgia. If you have additional health concerns it is vital that you work directly with an independent agent that can help steer you in the right direction towards the best plan for you.

Mutual of Omaha – Living PromiseMutual Of Omaha Logo

This company has an A financial rating and offers some of the lowest rates for those that qualify.

As mentioned, this condition will not hinder the ability to qualify for most plans, the same goes for both of Mutual of Omaha’s Living Promise policies.

There are 2 plans offered under the Living Promise name:

Level – No waiting period & lowest premiums

Graded – 2-year waiting period & high premiums

While we HIGHLY recommend the Level plan, the Graded policy we do not recommend for a couple of reasons.

(1) High prices & (2) Payout structure during the waiting period (return of paid premiums +10%)

Again, the Level plan is highly recommended and available to those with widespread pain.

The medications Cymbalta, Lyrica, or Savella will not affect your ability to qualify for coverage.

Foresters Financial – PlanRightForesters Financial Logo black and white

This company is a Fraternal Benefits Organization meaning that they operate as a non-profit organization.

This allows them to pass savings onto you. One of the ways they do this is by offering all policyholders discounts on hearing, legal, dental, and vision services.

On the application for its PlanRight policies, there is no mention of this condition.

There are 3 plan options:

Preferred – No waiting period & low prices

Standard – No waiting period & slightly higher prices

Basic – 2-year waiting period & highest prices

Both the Preferred and Standard plans offer great coverage options with underwriting that is a bit more understanding than Mutual of Omaha.

For those with this diagnosis, you will be eligible for the Preferred plan, assuming you can otherwise qualify.

For people taking or filling a Cymbalta or Savella prescription, you will be eligible. If you have filled a Lyrica prescription there will be some follow-up questions as it is also used for seizures and diabetic neuropathy, which affects plan qualification.

Royal Neighbors of AmericaRoyal Neighbors Logo black and white

This carrier is also a non-profit fraternal benefits organization offering similar discounts as Foresters Financial.

The big difference between these companies in terms of qualifying for coverage is that the underwriting is more lenient with Royal Neighbors of America.

There are 2 plans offered:

Level – No waiting period & low prices

Graded – 2-year waiting period & higher prices

During the 2-year waiting period there is partial coverage immediately. The payout structure during this time is:

  • Death in year 1 – 30% of total policy amount
  • Death in year 2 – 70% of total policy amount
  • Death in year 3 or later – 100% of total policy amount

This is a true Graded policy that has a favorable payout structure. If you are unable to qualify for a Level plan due to illness, this Graded policy is also highly recommended.

There are only 9 total health questions asked on the application, none of which ask about this condition.

If you have recently filled your prescription for Lyrica, Cymbalta, or Savella it will not be an issue.

This plan could be best for those who have had additional health concerns including diabetes, obesity, cancer, receiving home health care, heart disease, or surgery, among others.

Captive Agency vs Independent Agency

Understanding this difference is essential to qualifying for and ultimately purchasing the policy with the lowest price and best coverage.

Captive agencies are able to sell plans from one carrier only.

These agencies are usually in every town with a local representative that has basically bought into the franchise. These agencies usually have high brand awareness and advertise heavily on tv commercials, billboards, and through the mail. Typically they service coverage over multiple lines including home, life, and auto.

Independent agencies are able to represent plans from multiple carriers.

Working with an independent agency opens up the door to more coverage possibilities. As previously mentioned, each carrier is condition-specific in terms of getting accepted for coverage. By working with an independent agency that is not tied to only one carrier, you open up the possibility of getting the best plan available to you.

Working with an independent agency will not cost you more money, in fact, it will more likely save you both TIME and MONEY. Independent agencies get paid by the carriers for bringing them customers, you will not pay anything to the agency itself.
